Research Opportunities

Explore BiGG Data Icon

Research projects for the Explore BiGG Data REEU offered research training in the analysis of large datasets (“big data”) to understand the intersection of contemporary omics and One Health systems. Students explored how features of population- or community-level genomics, metabolomics, microbiomics, etc. affected animal, plant, human, and/or environmental health. Through the BiGG Data REEU, Scholars utilized bioinformatic tools to explore and process big data, including DNA or protein sequence quality control, processing, and analysis using basic statistical procedures and data visualization software in R. Students received training in communicating research in these complex systems to other scientists and the general public.

Explore BiGG Data projects listed below offered research training in analysis of big data to fully understand ramifications of microbiomes, metabolomes, and genetics of One Health systems. By the end of their REEU experience, Scholars performed multiple bioinformatics tasks to answer One Health questions including, but not limited to, quality control/filtering, sequence alignment/assembly, protein and coding analysis, and basic statistics. Students also received training in communicating research in these complex systems to the other scientists and the general public.
